Prayer When You Are Afraid: A Quiet Prayer for Courage
A short Christian prayer for moments when you are afraid, with biblical encouragement to slow down, seek God, and take the next step.
There are moments when fear arrives before you have time to prepare for it. You may be worried about your health, family, work, finances, relationships, or something you cannot even explain.
In those moments, you do not need impressive words. You can simply turn toward God.
A Prayer When You Are Afraid
Lord Jesus,
I am afraid, and I do not know exactly what to do with this feeling.
You already know what is happening in my heart. You know the situation I am facing, the questions I cannot answer, and the future I cannot see.
Please help me slow down and remember that You are with me.
Give me courage without pretending that everything is easy. Give me wisdom to know what I should do next. Give me patience when I have to wait. Give me strength when I feel weak.
Help me not to make decisions only because I am afraid. Teach me to seek truth, wise counsel, and Your direction.
I place this moment in Your hands. I may not know what tomorrow will bring, but I can trust You with the next step.
In Your name, Jesus, amen.
A Verse to Hold Onto
“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” — Psalm 56:3”
Notice the timing of the verse: when I am afraid. Trust is not presented as something reserved for people who never struggle. It is a response we can practice in the middle of fear.
What Can You Do Right Now?
When fear is intense, make the next step small.
- Take a slow breath and stop for a moment.
- Name what you are actually afraid of.
- Separate what you can control from what you cannot.
- Pray before making a rushed decision.
- Talk to someone wise and trustworthy if you need support.
You do not have to solve your entire future tonight.
When Fear Keeps Returning
If the same fear keeps returning, do not assume that you have failed spiritually. Bring it back to God as often as necessary. You can also take practical steps to address the situation and seek professional support when fear or anxiety begins affecting your daily life.
Faith does not require you to refuse every form of help. Sometimes a faithful response includes prayer, wise counsel, medical care, mental health support, rest, or a difficult but necessary conversation.
A One-Sentence Prayer
“Jesus, I am afraid, but I choose to place this moment in Your hands and take the next faithful step with You.”
